Most Able Learners

Opportunities for the most able learners at Sayes Court

At Sayes Court, we believe that each child should be given every opportunity to be the best that they can be, regardless of starting points or ability. This is as true for our more able learners as for any other child.

The majority of the opportunities for more able learners come through Quality First Teaching (QFT). We understand that challenge must be truly embedded in classroom practice, not just an addition. We therefore ensure that lessons are planned in order to support the higher ability learners to be challenged and to progress at a speed that is right for them. This may be through the use of differentiated inputs, peeling on and off groups, adult support and through accurate and well-considered differentiation based on the mastery approach to learning.

Other opportunities for the most able learners include:

  • Access to booster clubs in Year 6

  • Small group work with a secondary maths specialist every week

  • Year 3 and 4 more able English sessions at a secondary school

  • BET challenge days for the more able in Years 3 and 4

  • Small group focused writing sessions for the more able in Year 6 with the Deputy on a regular basis
