British Values

Our school reflects British values in all that we do. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to their community and the wider world. 

Learning about British values forms a key part of children’s spiritual, moral, cultural and social education. The five British values that the Government has identified are: 

• Democracy 
• Individual Liberty 
• Mutual Respect  
• The Rule of Law 
• Tolerance 

How should we help our children prepare for adult life as citizens of Britain? 

• Develop their self-confidence and self-esteem. 
• Develop their understanding of right and wrong, and their respect for the law. 
• Encourage them to take responsibility for their behaviour. 
• Encourage involvement in the community and wider society. 
• Encourage respect for themselves, others and their environment 
• Promote tolerance of and respect for all cultures and faiths. 
• Encourage participation in the democratic process. 

How does our school develop children’s understanding of British values? 

Democracy  

We teach Democracy by: 

• Providing opportunities for children to experience the democratic process.  Examples of this include:  
• voting for Head Boy / Girl 
• voting on House Team Names 
• voting for playground equipment  
• teaching about the democratic process in Britain 
• providing opportunities for children to make changes to life within our school and community  
• throughout the school day for example by taking turns in class, at lunch and in after school clubs. 

Individual Liberty  

We teach Individual Liberty by: 

• developing children’s understanding of the concept of freedom and choice 
• through our curriculum, which inculcates values of understanding, tolerance and respect for others, including those of other faiths. 
• through our extra-curricular provision, which offers equal opportunities for all children 
• holding discussions in all subjects which allow children to develop respect for the opinions, values and beliefs of others. 

Mutual Respect  

We teach Mutual Respect and Tolerance by: 

• celebrating events from a range of cultures and religions  
• inviting visitors from a wide range of cultures, religions and backgrounds to talk to the children  
• teaching manners explicitly  
• teaching children to take care of their environment  
• through our curriculum and in particular History, R.E. and PSHE curriculums  

Rule of Law  

We teach the Rule of Law by: 

• developing children’s understanding of human rights 
• implementing our school and class charters which have clear and agreed statements 
• teaching children about the process of law-making and the part that citizens can play in that process 
• developing children's understanding that they are responsible and accountable for their actions
• using Good to be Green consistently across the school
