Oak Class is a warm and welcoming environment and fosters independent learning, focusing on children’s interests, awe and wonder. A popular area in the classroom is our outdoor reading area. The children show inquisitiveness in what’s inside, sparking their investigative, conversational, and interactional skills. Teaching and learning in the Reception classroom is both inside and outside with a balance of structured lessons and discovery time, allowing the children to develop new skills through activities and play.

The curriculum we follow in Reception is the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the children are working towards their Early Learning Goals in the prime areas: Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional development, Physical Development and also, the specific areas of Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Further to this, lots of reading and listening to books, independent writing and lessons and activities are taught to encourage collaboration as well as developing their specific individual skills. The children use Bug Club to develop their reading and writing skills using phonics and Power Maths to develop their mathematical awareness. The children are encouraged to take an active part in their learning journey and are encouraged to look at and reflect on their work to support their further learning and development.
